COVID-19 - Working Suggestions

COVID-19 WFH Cyber advices

Being organised and working from home is hard especially in isolations like this.

I’ve been always mobile and as remote as I can but not every job can be achieved in this way.

For the people that are lucky enough to be able to work remotely my advices are:

Some Advices to work from remote

- Separate work life from office life - if possible in a complete separate space

- Setup time to start and finish. One good tool that I’ve used of late is TOGGL: http://toggl.com.

- Prep meal/snack to maximise the time the morning or the evening before (use those commute time)

For cybersecurity section of advices during this period:

- MFA everything if possible (that is multi factor authentication, SMS Authentcation, phonecall verification). Don’t know if your provider supports it, check it here: https://twofactorauth.org.

- be conscious of e-mail with dodgy Covid 19 campaigns. Type in the browser the address. Those are few of the addresses that are known malicious. The more famous one is the website spreading malicious informations

- check your home network. A lot of attacks will be delivered leveraging the new network position. Did you know that just a VPN (not free) or a raspberry PI can be used to segment your network, have a look at https://raspberrypihq.com/how-to-turn-a-raspberry-pi-into-a-wifi-router/.

Network access & Security

> the new network segmentation is going to be a challenges for traditional organization (harder outer shell and softer inner)

> Consider cloud broker services to manage the scale and bursting capabilities

> Consider giving guidance to users as their home is the new office (e.g. home VPN services and additional devices to segment home network from office network)

With the extra time

> Learn something new

> volunteer at the local community the extra time (OWASP, CSA etc...)

> Spend quality time with the facility

> if you have kids staying at home, explain when issue, cover the camera and go on mute. Solve the kid situation and come back.

use the commute time to:

- meditate

- plan for the day and wrap up of the day

I tend to use a daily planner for those activities, here is a template it could help you

During conference call:

- Use backdrop if you don’t want to show your house or do conference call with the desk close to the wall

- Always use the camera and keep the human contact alive

- Dress professionally or smart casual in alignment with the office etiquette. Home does not mean lax.
